Teru empowers parents to be knowledgeable and proactive about their children’s education. There are macro and micro considerations that can help parents understand parenting and education in global context and on the personal level, with obstacles that we come in contact with on a daily basis in our homes and schools.
On a macro level, we must acknowledge the systematic workings of the US education system, and how it differs from other leading economies. This includes the large scale ideas like culture, equity, and teachers (recruiting, training, and retention), and education governance. How do these ideas affect our children’s education?
Equally important is the question, “what can I do today?” To enact immediate change, I believe we can approach the subjects of mastery, community, and technology. These things lead to questions like,
What does education mean and what does success look like for my family?
What are my educational values for my children?
How can I positively contribute to my children’s learning outcomes at home?
Talking openly about your educational lens and decisions we have made for our children is vital. And we must look at the bigger picture. Understanding what our global counterparts practice and believe when it comes to education is a productive place to start.
